Do I need scaffolding or a mobile tower?

Mobile scaffolding inside a new residential home

You've got a job to do around the house. Maybe you're repainting the exterior, fixing the gutters, or getting the roof inspected. You know you need to work at height, and you know that a ladder isn't going to cut it. But when you start looking into your options, two terms keep coming up: scaffolding and mobile towers. What's the difference? And how do you know which one you need?

At Metroscaff, we get this question often. The honest answer is: it depends on your project. Here's a straightforward guide to help you figure it out.

What Is traditional scaffolding?

Scaffolding is a temporary structure made up of steel tubes, boards, and fittings that is erected around or alongside a building to provide a safe working platform. It's built to the specific shape of your home or structure, and it stays in place for the duration of the project.

Scaffolding is typically the go-to solution for:

  • Projects that require access along the full length or height of a building, such as repainting an entire exterior, reroofing, or repointing brickwork

  • Work that requires multiple people to operate safely at the same time

  • Jobs where you'll need to haul materials up to height (paint, tiles, timber)

  • Projects that will take more than a day or two. Scaffolding provides a stable, consistent platform you can return to

  • Any work involving irregular or steeply pitched rooflines

Scaffolding is installed and dismantled by certified professionals (like our team at Metroscaff), which means you don't have to worry about the setup. It's designed to comply with New Zealand's health and safety regulations, and a certified scaffold gives you, your tradespeople, and your insurer confidence that the work is being done safely.

What is a mobile tower?

A mobile tower (also called a mobile scaffold tower) is a freestanding, wheeled scaffold structure that can be moved around your site. It's quick to assemble, easy to relocate, and ideal for shorter or more targeted tasks.

Mobile towers are best suited for:

  • Internal work: painting ceilings, accessing high shelving, working on light fittings or ducting

  • Shorter external tasks that don't require access along the full building perimeter

  • Single-day or spot jobs where you only need elevated access in one specific location

  • Flat, stable ground surfaces where the tower can be safely positioned and locked

Mobile towers are a cost-effective option when scaffolding would be overkill. However, they're not appropriate for all situations, particularly for steep or complex rooflines, multi-storey work, or jobs where you need continuous access around the full building.

Key questions to help you decide

Still not sure which is right for you? Ask yourself:

  1. How high do you need to work? For anything above two storeys, scaffolding is almost always the right call.

  2. How long will the job take? Multi-day or multi-week projects benefit from the permanence of scaffolding.

  3. How large is the access area? If you need access along an entire wall or around a full roofline, scaffolding will serve you far better.

  4. Will multiple tradespeople be working at once? Scaffolding provides much more platform space.

  5. Is the ground flat and stable? Mobile towers require a firm, level surface. On sloped Auckland sections, scaffolding is usually the safer option.
